President Ian’s Announcements
a) The hand over of the R360 000 Eye Machine on Thursday evening was an outstanding success and all involved are sincerely thanked. It was very encouraging to note that fully half the members of the club attended this function, many with their Anns.
The machine has been very well received by the medical staff . As I understand it this is the only public hospital in S.A. that has this state of the art piece of equipment available!
Well done Bev Radue, Rolf Angelbauer and all others associated with this stunning project.
Neil Crawford was thanked for making the Grey Pavilion available for this prestigious function.
We now await with considerable anticipation some public acknowledgement in the Herald?, Sun? and/or Algoa Fm?
b) The Bloemendal Orchestra, which is the developmental orchestra of the Eastern Cape Philamonic Orchestra, has invited us to their practice at the New Apostolic Church in Palmridge on Sunday 21st March at 4pm. The orchestra members wish to publically thank the Club for the drums and music stands we provided recently. Please diarise.
Our dynamic Fellowship Committee has arranged not one but TWO events this Saturday.
- Our resident orthnithologist Ken Munro, ably assisted by Jenny, will be leading a bird watch in Settlers Park. This will be the practical side of the illustrated talk they gave to the Rotarians yesterday. All welcome, but please ensure you bring hat, water, binoculars. Ken estimates the outing will last about 90 minutes.
Meet at the car park near St Georges Hospital at 8am on Saturday 13th.
- Water skiing and a braai at the North End Lake. Water skiing for the action-oriented will start at 2pm and fires will be lit at 5pm. This Bring and Braai is an ideal opportunity to involve the entire family. There will be a cash bar available for the supply of your liquid requirements.
Let us support our hard working and innovative Fellowship Committee!
Our Speakers - Ken and Jenny Munro
Ken and Jenny produced an illustrated talk on the birds we are likely to encounter on Saturday in Settlers Park. Their depth of knowledge on the appearance and habits of our feathered friends such as the Knysna lourie, Cape White eye, drongo, bokmakierie to name a few, is encyclopaedic.
With suitable and appropriate chirps throughout by Arthur Ahlschaler the talk was most informative.
Well done!

March is obviously a domestically quiet period as no weddings took place between the 9th and 16th and only one birthday: Alan de Roer on 11th. Happy birthday, Alan.
Brendon Smith has the Fellowship Box.
A guy was driving home when he spotted a sign in front of a house saying “Talking dog for sale”
He stopped and asked the owner whether he could see this remarkable dog.
In the backyard he finds a Labrador.
“Can you speak?” asked the man.
“Yup”, says the Lab
“So tell me your story”, says the man.
“Well”, the dog said,” I discovered I could talk when I was very young. I wanted to help the government so I told the intelligence services about my gift. In no time they had me jetting around the world, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders because no one would figure a dog was eavesdropping. I was one of the most valuable spies for 8 years. But all of the travelling tired me out so I took a job at the airport to do undercover security .I did very well and was awarded a batch of medals. Then I got married and had lots of puppies. Now I am retired”.
The guy was amazed and turned and asked the owner how much he wanted for the dog.
“R10″, said the man.
“Just R10! This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him for so little?”
“Because he is a liar - he never did all that stuff!”
Vocational Readings - Ken Munro
Many of us have heard opportunity knocking at our door, but by the time we unhooked the chain, pushed back the bolt, turned two locks and shut off the burglar alarm - its gone!
Final Thought
A quote from Hollywood for the “Kortbroek manne” that arrived at lunch yesterday to consider: “Legs should be hairless, slim and well-proportioned with well-turned ankles at one end and tight buttocks at the other”.
How do you shape?????????????????????
Malcom Andrew
